How to set monitor color profile?

But no explanation for how to do it. I have a dci-p3 monitor so I would like to move to that profile instead of srgb.

Yeah icc would be a custom profile, DCI-P3 is a standard and common wide-gamut colorspace, between rec709(srgb) and rec2020(wide gamut implemented in hyprland).

Apparently what hardware manufacturers did after they managed to consistently create 100% srgb displays, was go beyond to wider gamuts, and dci-p3 is one of the more common targets today. My display is on an off the shelf MSI gaming laptop.

Looking up random laptops on amazon. took me to indian amazon for some reason but doesn't matter:

They're all lenovo for some reason, but yeah standard off the shelf laptops, and none of them even imply being 10-bit displays. My laptop's spec page doesn't say anything about colorspace but looking at the overview:

It also defaults to 8bit and I don't see any difference when forcing it to 10-bit with the hyprland settings (although the hyprctl monitors says it's formatted to 10-bit, but I don't know if that's hyprland trying to force it to a format it doesn't support or if it actually supports it, I would need a reliable test to check, but the wide gamut format in hyprland (rec 2020) is too wide for my display anyways and it makes the colors look washed out.)

Although they say dci-p3 if the wikipedia article is to be believed it should probably be display-p3 which is specifically for displays and has the same gamma setting as srgb. It's also known as DCI P3 D65 where D65 stands for Gamma6500K

I don't know much about CM/HDR, that's done by ujin. At least for my laptop I can see the difference between 8 and 10 bit when there's blur or gradients.

Currently there are 3 options for colorspace: sRGB, BT.2020 and whatever is written in the EDID. Adding more options without implementing ICC seems pointless atm.
If your monitor returns EDID with correct primaries then you can use cm, edid setting. If it doesn't you can try various edid override settings like drm.edid_firmware kernel parameter. Those settings usually don't work with nvidia on wayland.

cm, edid unfortunately only gives me marginally better results than cm, wide: worse than srgb.

How would I use the drm.edid_firmware parameter to work around this? It's worth a try since I'm on hybrid graphics and I think hyprland itself is being rendered by the amd igpu, so it should work, i mean my understanding is that you use it to set a custom edid, so I would need to get my monitors edid data and modify the color primaries on it. I'm struggling to find a way to d o this.

Something like cat /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0/drm/card0/card0-HDMI-A-1/edid | edid-decode should give something like

  Color Characteristics:
    Red  : 0.6826, 0.3066
    Green: 0.2265, 0.7304
    Blue : 0.1464, 0.0478
    White: 0.3134, 0.3291

For DCI-P3 you want it to have these values:

I don't know which tools support editing this info. Custom resolution utility under wine probably.
The tricky part is overriding EDID with something like drm.edid_firmware=DP-2:edid/crt-edid.bin kernel boot option. Might not work with some drivers. Might result in a black screen if something is wrong with the file.
