What's the future of gltf-pipeline? #670

Description

@ggetz

CesiumJS as well as some of Cesium's internal projects depend on gltf-pipeline. And based on the number of issues opened in the past year, there are still users external to Cesium using it as well. However, the project is receiving sporadic updates at best, and future plans for this project are unclear.

I'm opening this in light of #669, since understanding what the current state of this project would be major factor in moving forward with that or not.

Some immediate questions come to mind, more input is always appreciated.

  • How much of this project is now redundant with more modern and frequently updated glTF tools such as glTF-Transform?
  • There's a circular dependency between gltf-pipeline and CesiumJS. Having to keep the two in sync is causing friction and slowing down updates to both projects. Do we bother to resolve those?
  • Who's the best party to triage incoming issues?
